PRESS RELEASE
In a first for Western NSW, OCTEC in Orange has successfully trained aged care workers to deliver medications to residents in high care nursing homes. The training has taken place at Wontama Nursing Homes for more than 200 employees from across the region and from various nursing homes and hostels. Funding was provided through the NSW Department of Education and Training and the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aging. UnitingCare Aging have adopted a set of new strategies to assist with improving care for residents. There is now a new leadership program to address a national shortage of Registered Nurses and to provide career paths for existing aged care workers. The new more senior position of Team Leader has been created for some Care Service Employees who hold a Certificate IV in Aged Care work and who have completed the medications unit "Provide physical assistance with medication". Alison Poole, Director, Organisational Development, UnitingCare Aging Western Region stated "Not only is this a first for country NSW, but also this is a first for UnitingCare Western Region and it reflects a significant committment to improving the quality of care to residents. We are very pleased to be part of this program to support aged care workers to improve their skills and knowledge base, while giving them a chance at progressing their careers in our facilities."
