Neurodivergent people can face significant barriers to employment, with many struggling to find a workplace that can safely support their medical condition<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participant Jayddah lives with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), causing many daily non- epileptic seizures. This condition took a toll on her anxiety, making daily life a constant struggle. Finding stable employment felt like an impossible goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Edensor Park First Nations teenager wanted to enter the workforce instead of finish Year 12 at South-West Sydney\u2019s Glenfield special education school, Ajuga School. This prompted Jayddah to reach out to OCTEC <\/a>Bonnyrigg and meet with Career Consultant Joan Obuchowski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding Jayddah\u2019s complex situation, Joan organised a consultation with her mother and Ajuga School Transition and Career Projects Officer Samantha Rigg, at the school<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jayddah wanted to work in a supportive workplace that would offer stability and safety to accommodate her medical condition and support worker. Joan worked with her towards this goal, creating a personalised action plan to improve her employability, and building a tailored resume for an office-based job. <\/a>They built in her knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 and her understanding in social media communication practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joan reached out to several employers in both the government<\/a> and private sectors on Jayddah\u2019s behalf, which led to a job interview with Liverpool Hospital. Her lack of COVID-19 vaccination led to her being unsuccessful. Jayddah remained determined to find another opportunity despite the setback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jayddah\u2019s condition prevents her from driving a vehicle and using public transport on her own. With this in mind, Joan tried to find a suitable job closer to Jayddah\u2019s home. The allowance of her carer needed to be accepted too. They monitor her frequent seizures, to ensure emergency services are called in an episode where one is longer than 30 minutes. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jayddah secured unpaid work experience in an administration role with NDIS support provider Ruhil Care Disability Service\u00a0in Cecil Park. Following a successful four-week work experience trial, the employer offered Jayddah a paid part-time traineeship in community services. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to her admin duties, Jayddah is also providing assistance to people with disabilities. She is also currently working towards completing a qualification of a Certificate III in Community Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joan also continues to check in with Jayddah to see if she needs any extra assistance in her role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This job has provided Jayddah with a sense of purpose, and a supportive work environment she appreciates every day.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jayddah has proven that commitment and capability are not defined by her medical condition. She finally found a job that works with her needs, office skills, and offers stable employment and career growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
